JAI MA!

Navaratri is a 9-night festival celebrating Goddess Durga’s victories over the demons that represent the negative qualities that keep us from realising our true, eternal self. The Divine Mother, in the form of Durga Maa, is the Remover of Miseries. She appears in 9 different forms, each an embodiment of the qualities that one needs to advance on the spiritual path.

Day 1: Shailaputri Devi

September 26, 2022

Shailaputri is the most powerful and glorified of all the nine forms of Durga. She is an incarnation of Parvati. In a previous birth, She was Sati who threw Herself into the yagna fire due to Her father’s insult of Her beloved husband, Shiva. She was born again as the daughter of the Himalayas and took the aspect of Shailputri to destroy pride and the demons of ‘too much’ and ‘too little’. We pray to Her to help us surrender to the Divine. Her colour is red.

Day 2: Brahmacharini Devi

September 27, 2022

In Her next life, the Goddess Parvati again wished to have Shiva as Her husband. She undertook 600 years of strict penance and meditation before Her wish was granted. As Brahmacharini Devi She is the Goddess of Discipline and She shows us that sadhana takes time and commitment. We must be clear about what we want and stay focused regardless of what goes on around us. We pray to Her for discipline in our sadhana and to advance on the spiritual path. Her colour is white.

DAY 3: CHANDRAGHANTA DEVI

September 28, 2022

In Her next life, the Goddess Parvati again wished to have Shiva as Her husband. She undertook 600 years of strict penance and meditation before Her wish was granted. As Brahmacharini Devi She is the Goddess of Discipline and She shows us that sadhana takes time and commitment. We must be clear about what we want and stay focused regardless of what goes on around us. We pray to Her for discipline in our sadhana and to advance on the spiritual path. Her colour is white.

DAY 4: KUSHMANDA DEVI

September 29, 2022

When the universe did not yet exist and there was darkness everywhere, Kushmanda Devi created the universe with a smile. She then manifested Herself and spread Her light in all directions, like rays from the sun. She exterminates sorrow and diseases and amplifies life, fame and strength. Kushmanda Devi is appeased with the slightest amount of devotion and if anyone wholeheartedly worships Her, they will certainly gain Her favour. Her colour is blue.

DAY 5: SKANDA-MATA

September 30, 2022

Skanda Mata is the mother of Muruga, the warrior god and commander of the celestial armies whom She holds on Her lap. She is the Mother who gives the power to vanquish all negativity. By holding Muruga, Skanda Mata shows how She is holding all of us. If you pray sincerely from your heart, ‘Maa, I really want that’, She will accept it and you will feel Her. She will help you and She will give you what you want and do everything for you. Her colour is yellow.

DAY 6: KATYAYANI DEVI

October 1, 2022

Katyayani Devi is a fierce form of Shakti. She is widely known as the war goddess who killed the demons of anger and hatred. While She is compassionate, She is also strict and disciplined to help us advance towards the Divine. We pray to Her to destroy diseases, sorrow and fear and to bless us with wealth, salvation, success, passion, a good mate, and a deep spiritual life. Her colour is Peacock Green/Blue.

DAY 7: KALARATRI DEVI

October 2, 2022

Kalaratri Devi is dark: the colour of night and infinity. She destroys evil and took this particular form and appearance in order to fight demons and purify the world to save Her children. Although She appears terrifying, She is very soft and innocent. She is known as the One who is always giving, who is always doing good for Her devotees. She accepts everything from the devotee, absorbing both the good and the bad. We pray to Her to help us be free and really surrender to the Divine so we can be our true Self. Her colour is black.

DAY 8: MAHA GAURI DEVI

October 3, 2022

Maha Gauri’s white skin and clothing symbolises the aspect of our true Self, which is without stain or impurity. She wants us to cross over the limitations of our minds so that we can realise that we are ever-pure, ever-free. She shows us that it’s not what, or how much, we’ve done, but how we are doing it, that matters. When things are done out of Love, the Divine will run to us. We pray for Maha Gauri’s Grace to cleanse us from the karma of our past sins and to help us attain the Feet of the Lord. Her colour is pastel, light colours.

DAY 9: SIDDIDHATRI DEVI

October 4, 2022

Siddhidatri Devi is an aspect of Maha Lakshmi; She is the ultimate form of the Goddess who is unified with the sustenance and liberation forces of the great Lord, Maha Vishnu. In order to attain ‘siddhis’, power, you need knowledge and wisdom, which Mother Siddhidatri grants. She is the One who delivers eighteen types of successes, both spiritual and material. We pray to Siddhidatri Devi to bestow on each one the Grace of Love, the Grace of wisdom and the Grace of attaining Her Grace. Her colour is red.

DID YOU  KNOW?

The spring and fall are seasons of transition; they are ideal times to restore balance, both physically and spiritually. Ancient yogis chose this time to focus on their sadhana and to fast in order to cleanse the physical body in preparation for the food changes of the new season. Navaratri is a time when we do both in the company of sangha, our spiritual community. Fall Navaratri is connected to Devi, the feminine aspect of the Divine. This festival concludes with Dussehra, the victory day when Durga Maa’s triumph over the demon Mahishasura is celebrated.
